This website started in 1999 as newslookmag.com, Nepal's first online newsmagazine (See Internet Archive on Wayback Machine. And this, too. Also, for a detailed historical context, see this article). It was launched and operated by journalist Dharma Adhikari. It began as part of his online journalism class at the Missouri School of Journalism at Columbia.
The site pioneered link journalism on pre-blog-era weblogs, aggregating online news on all things Nepali. Until Web 2.0 fully arrived and CMS platforms became the norm, every page was meticulously handcrafted in HTML. Newslookmag was the first news outlets blocked during the 2005 state of emergency. To circumvent the ban, the publication continued under a new domain name: nepalmonitor.com
The site with the new domain name continued to focus on aggregation journalism, on spotting trends, identifying news and developments of interest to Nepal, and curating them for general readers as well as for specialists. It also occasionally carried original features, commentaries and analyses on important topics of the day with implications for media and public affairs.
The publication went dormant in 2015 after a decade-and-a-half-long wild run. This is the archived version of the contents from that pioneering initiative, preserved here for historical or academic reference and future research.
